The five limbs of the day

What is a tithi?

A tithi is one lunar day β€” the time the moon takes to move 12Β° ahead of the sun. Thirty tithis make a lunar month, split into the bright half (shukla paksha) and dark half (krishna paksha). Fasts, festivals and muhurtas are all fixed by tithi, which is why the almanac leads with it.

What is a nakshatra?

The moon's path is divided into 27 star-fields; the one hosting the moon today is the day's nakshatra. Each carries its own temperament β€” swift, fixed, gentle, sharp β€” which is why some days suit journeys and others suit foundations.

What is yoga?

The panchang yoga is computed from the combined motion of sun and moon β€” 27 in all. Some (like Siddhi and Shubha) bless beginnings; a few (like Vyatipata and Vaidhriti) counsel patience.

What is karana?

A karana is half a tithi β€” eleven of them cycle through the month. Vishti (also called Bhadra) is the one to avoid for new work; the rest are broadly workable.

What are rahu kaal, yamaganda and gulika?

Three daily windows the tradition sets aside as inauspicious for beginnings, each about 90 minutes, falling at different times by weekday. Ongoing work is unaffected β€” the caution is only for starts.

Tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana from mean sun–moon longitudes; sunrise/sunset are seasonal approximations for north India. Local coordinates shift these windows slightly.
